Project Overview
Celebrating Craft Through Space
The Dehradun Handicraft Museum is envisioned as a cultural institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich tradition of Indian craftsmanship. The design creates a series of interconnected galleries, courtyards, and shaded verandahs that offer visitors an immersive experience of craft, material, and making.
Rather than functioning as a singular enclosed building, the museum is conceived as a campus of low-rise pavilions organized around landscaped courts. This approach fosters a quiet and contemplative atmosphere where architecture becomes a backdrop to the stories of artisans and their work.
Design Concept
A Courtyard for Craft and Community
Inspired by traditional Indian architecture, the museum is structured around open-to-sky courtyards that bring natural light, ventilation, and moments of pause into the visitor journey. Brick walls, tiled roofs, and stone flooring create a warm and tactile environment that resonates with the handmade objects on display.
The architecture emphasizes simplicity, permanence, and material honesty, reflecting the values inherent in craft traditions.
